The Japanese cherry blossom trees are to Washington, DC what the Statue of Liberty is to New York City. That is, both are beautiful statements that crossed oceans as a symbol of peace and prosperity between two nations. The blossoming trees appear to overtake the nation's capital in March-April each year, symbolizing the start of spring. The annual National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 3,000 cherry blossom trees received in 1912 as a gift from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo.

What a perfect weekend getaway. Pink treelined streets framing the National Mall.
