Yosemite National Park

Our journey started in San Francisco. We rose at dawn, checked out of our hotel (The Opal San Francisco), and started our 4+ hour drive to Yosemite National Park. The drive took us through Oakland and the San Joaquin Valley, where the road narrowed, allowing us to make frequent stops at the local produce stands along the roadside. The drive was easy and slow.

Upon entering Yosemite National Park, we rolled down the windows to let the woody, aromatic air in. We stopped at the famed Tunnel View to snap a few pictures, then followed the Merced River to the valley. Natural wonders surrounded us on all sides: Half Dome, Glacier Point, El Capitan, and Yosemite Falls.

The highlights of our 48 hour trip included:

Horseback riding to Mirror Lake

Stargazing atop Glacier Point

Nearly freezing to death in our cute tents in Camp Curry

Hiking up to Vernal Falls

Camp Curry

Curry Village offered the campground atmosphere my city-slicker friends and I were looking for. Amazing views, great food, and fantastic central location. Curry Village offered everything we needed to "camp" without having to lug gear in our rental car or carry-on luggage.

Glacier Point Stargazing

Yosemite National Park, miles from the nearest city lights, has a very dark night sky that makes it a great place to look at the stars. Bring along a star chart and look for constellations, or look through binoculars at some of our planetary neighbors. In June, July, and August, amateur astronomers often set up telescopes at Glacier Point on Saturdays, and astronomy walks or talks are also be offered in Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, and Wawona.

Vernal Falls Trail

This very popular hike originates near Happy Isles in eastern Yosemite Valley (shuttle stop #16). The John Muir and Mist Trails offer spectacular, up-close views of two large waterfalls, enjoyable scenery along the Merced River, and unique views across Yosemite Valley. This first paved mile of trail is busiest and accesses the Vernal Fall Footbridge. Almost entirely uphill, you can appreciate views along the way, and during spring, when the water levels are at their peak, you can also glimpse Illillouette Fall from this first section of trail.

You'll find an excellent view of Vernal Fall from the footbridge at 0.8 miles (1.3 km). About 0.2 miles (0.3 km) beyond the bridge, the Mist Trail and the John Muir Trail diverge. To proceed directly to the top of Vernal Fall, follow the Mist Trail 0.5 miles (0.8 km) up a steep granite stairway of over 600 steps. Prepare for slippery footing and a tremendous amount of waterfall spray in spring and early summer (hence the name for this trail!). You will delight in views of Vernal Fall all along this stretch of trail and may even be able to see a rainbow in the spray of the fall. At the top of Vernal Fall, you can experience jaw-dropping views straight down the length of the 317-foot waterfall (please don't cross the railings and use extreme caution while you're near any flowing water or wet rock in this area).
