Smooth Sailing

Updated: Apr 18, 2019

I'm planning to take my first cruise...ever. As a novice, I've dived head first into numerous blogs, vlogs, and Pinterest boards to collect tips and tricks for first time cruisers. Here's a collection of packing tips that I've uncovered in my research:

Suite Enhancements:

I'm planning to pack a power strip for extra sockets. Most suites only have a few sockets, which isn't enough when you consider the numerous phones, cameras, and tablet/eReaders that may need to charge simultaneously.

I'm also planning to bring an over-the-door shoe rack to store sunscreen, hair tools, and other miscellaneous items. Additionally, having a pop-up dirty clothes bin will help keep the suite tidy.

Most ships have metal walls and doors. Hook magnets can be used to conveniently store itineraries and lanyards while on-board.

Newer ships have energy efficient rooms where the lights and A/C are only turned on when the key card is inserted into the in-room card reader. Any hotel key or business card will suffice if you're wanting to keep the A/C running when the room is vacated.

Deck Days:

It can be very windy at sea, so expert cruisers recommend bringing towel clips to keep towels secured to deck chairs. This ensures people know the chair is occupied if you get up for a drink, too. When not in use on-deck, these clips can be used to hang damp swimsuits in the bathroom or veranda, or to keep the curtains closed on mornings where you don't want the sun peeking in to your cabin.

There are drink stations all around the ship. Having a re-sealable cup (preferably one with a wide rim for easy filling) will ensure you're hydrated without having to use plastic cups or a bottle from the ship's gift shop. Also, having some form of dish detergent will help to keep your bottle clean, especially on longer cruises.

The Little Things:

Batteries, bandages, poo-potpourri, sunscreen, extra hangers and seasickness medication can come at a premium on the high seas. These are fairly obvious items to pack for any vacation, but what about highlighters and flash lights? Expert cruisers recommend having these tucked away in your bags, too. Suites, especially interior suites, can be very dark, and paper itineraries with on-board activities are nice to mark-up with highlighters.
